Finland

Our first show in Finland was at an “Indie Rock” festival in a city called Tampere.  The festival attracted a large number of skaters and Satanists, who were heavily into drug and alcohol. In general, People in Finland often struggle with depression, alcoholism and suicide and this crowd was very opposed to Christianity, but were in desperate need of God.

While one of the opening bands were playing, two guys came up to the front of the stage and tried drawing Pentagrams in the dirt. Tried is the key word here, because they were so intoxicated that they couldn’t figure out how to draw them. Instead they came back later and spelled out ´Satan´ in the dirt.

After the concert, David preached the message about Jesus, and called for anyone who wanted to know God to come to the fire. (We had people holding torches off to the side). Two girls, dressed in black make-up, came over and committed their lives to the Lord. On top of that, we had good conversations with many more people after the concert.

In spite of the small response, I believe that it was a very important night because we were able to present Jesus to a group of people who are violently opposed to anything Christian. The people we reached that night have such a negative idea about God and Jesus and after our concert many of them were shocked that the story we present in our show was about Jesus. It was a Jesus that they did not recognize. A Jesus that cries about the pain and injustice in the world and one that would do anything to free us from the bondage of sin.

Our second concert was in a town called Roveniemi in northern Finland (a 10 hour drive!). In fact, it is just a mile or two below the Arctic Circle. The article circle, for those of you who do not know, is the point on the earth where there is at least one day a year of complete sun light and one day a year of complete darkness. It is summer here, so even at midnight you could see the light from the sun on the horizon – it was a very beautiful sight.

Our show was at a nightclub on Sunday night. The club is a popular place for the youth of the city to come and drink and party. On a side note, it was nice to play an indoor concert and not have to battle the elements for a change!

After the concert, David shared the Gospel and spoke about the fact that following Jesus required going against the grain and being counter-cultural. He invited people to make a stand by making a public decision to follow Jesus – definitely not something you normally do in Finland.

David invited people to come to the front of the stage if they wanted to follow Jesus. Two guys stood up. They did this even as four of their friends mocked and then left the club in protest. It was an incredibly bold decision to make. Several people from our team took the two guys backstage and began to share with them what it meant to follow Jesus and connect them with the local church. The rest of the team and people from the church went out into the crowd and began a number of very encouraging conversations.

Our last concert took place in a nightclub. After the concert, a young guy from another band came up to David and said, “I’m not a religious person, but your concert touched me and changed my whole view on life”. Luke, the NLM drummer, spent time
talking to him and was able to lead him into a relationship with the Lord.

The people we reached in Finland are very closed to the Gospel, but it has been good to see some significant breakthroughs and we were encouraged by the fact that we have been able to bring a message of who Jesus truly is to people who have only heard lies about Him.
